Two spotted hyenas resting in the grass of the Maasai Mara

Montgomery Lab

The physiological and ecological foundations of social behavior in wild animals.

Department of Integrative Biology · Michigan State University

We study how group-living animals balance individual, social, and ecological demands in fluctuating environments. Combining behavioral ecology, remote sensing, and physiology, we work across two long-term field systems — spotted hyenas in Kenya and Verreaux's sifaka in Madagascar.

The lab is led by Dr. Tracy M. Montgomery, and is newly established and recruiting.
